How to use wall crack fiberglass mesh

  1. Prepare the Surface:
    • Clean the wall around the crack, removing any loose debris, dust, or paint around the area you plan to repair.
    • If the crack is wide, use a utility knife to make the crack slightly V-shaped to allow for better adhesion of the mesh and joint compound.
  2. Cut the Fiberglass Mesh:
    • Measure the length of the crack.
    • Cut a piece of the fiberglass mesh to fit over the crack, ensuring it’s slightly longer than the crack itself so that it covers the entire damaged area.
  3. Apply Joint Compound:
    • Using a putty knife, spread a thin layer of joint compound along the crack. Make sure to press the compound into the crack to fill it completely. You can apply a bit more joint compound than necessary as it will help hold the mesh in place.
  4. Apply the Mesh:
    • Lay the fiberglass mesh over the crack while the joint compound is still wet. Press the mesh into the compound gently to make sure it adheres. The mesh should slightly overlap the edges of the crack on both sides.
    • Smooth the mesh with your putty knife to eliminate any wrinkles or bubbles, ensuring the mesh lies flat and evenly against the wall.
  5. Apply More Joint Compound:
    • Spread a thin layer of joint compound over the mesh. Smooth it out with the putty knife, feathering the edges so that the compound blends seamlessly into the surrounding wall.
    • Let the compound dry completely (this may take several hours or overnight, depending on the thickness of the application).
  6. Sand and Smooth:
    • Once the joint compound is dry, sand the area lightly with sandpaper or a sanding block to create a smooth, even surface. Be careful not to sand too much and expose the mesh.
    • If the surface is still not perfectly smooth, apply another thin layer of joint compound, allow it to dry, and then sand again.
  7. Prime and Paint (Optional):
    • Once the repair is smooth and level, you can prime the area with a wall primer, especially if you applied multiple layers of joint compound.
    • After priming, finish with paint that matches your wall color.
